Episode 2
The White Standard of Leadership
Monday, January 19, 2009
As our nation inaugurates Barack Obama, the first African American into the highest leadership position, some say this represents a dramatic shift in U.S. race relations. Yet, despite decades of progress for minorities, according to new research many of us still expect leaders to be white, and we judge white leaders as more effective than their minority counterparts.
On this episode of Diversity MattersĀ® Dr. Ashleigh Shelby Rosette assistant Professor at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business joins co-hosts Judy Seidenstein and Dr. Richard Friend to explore the question of “how far have we really come if people still equate leadership with whiteness?” Together we examine the implications of Dr. Rosette’s groundbreaking research which demonstrates “being white,” is central to how people think about and define leadership.
