Gender Inclusion: Beyond Stereotypes of Masculinity and Femininity
Friday, November 30, 2007; 10AM (Eastern)

Every year thousands of workers experience unfair failure-to-hire, denial of promotion, hostile workplaces, and even unfair termination simply because they don't meet someone else's idea of what is a "real man" or a "real woman."

  • What are the costs to businesses, communities and families when people are expected to conform to rigid expectations of masculinity and femininity?
  • What are the best ways to challenge messages of hyper-masculinity/femininity, sexism, and homophobia that youth are receiving from media and mainstream hip-hop?
  • How do we promote a definition of manhood that builds positive attitudes toward education, labor force participation, and relationships with women and other men?

Judy Seidenstein and Richard Friend address these and other questions with Gina Reiss, Managing Director of The Gender Public Advocacy Coalition (GenderPAC).  GenderPAC works to ensure that classrooms, communities and workplaces are safe for everyone to learn, grow and succeed – whether or not they fit expectations for masculinity or femininity. As a human rights organization, GenderPAC promotes an understanding of the connection between discrimination based on gender stereotypes and sex, sexual orientation, age, race, and class.

We are also joined by GenderPac’s Brittney Hoffman, Campus Director; Khaleaph Luis, Community Partners Director; and Adrian Shanker of Muhlenberg College.
