Friday, June 9, 2006; 9AM (Eastern)
People living with disabilities face many barriers in the workplace. Some are physical and many are attitudinal. This episode addresses perceptions and assumptions that are commonly held about people with disabilities that impact inclusiveness within organizations today. What are some of the most common barriers people living with disabilities face? What are some of the best practices for promoting inclusiveness for people with disabilities at work? Even though the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) mandates non-discrimination and fairness for people living with disabilities, what are steps people can take to address barriers that still exist and build inclusiveness?
Join co-hosts Richard Friend and Judy Seidenstein as we address these and other provocative questions. Our guests include, Shelly Zabielski, an elementary school teacher who 7 years ago became ill at work and after a series of medical challenges acquired a spinal cord injury. Shelly tells her personal story and provides advice about living fully and working productively with a disability. Also joining us is Robert “BT”C Trierweiler, a therapist with Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, who runs a program helping people with disabilities and their employers make the transition back to work..
